Supporting a Dyslexic Learner Through SATs
Challenge: SEN diagnosis
A parent contacted OTUK concerned about their Year 6 child’s upcoming SATs. The student had a dyslexia diagnosis, and the parent was unsure how this would affect their performance. They were looking for a tutor with SEN experience who could provide targeted support, regular updates, and reassurance throughout the process.

Action: SEN-experienced tutoring with regular feedback
OTUK matched the student with a KS2 tutor experienced in supporting dyslexic learners. Many of our tutors hold Qualified Teacher Status and have a background in early years and SEN support. After each session, the tutor provided a detailed update covering (a) topics covered and upcoming lesson plans, (b) homework and additional resources, and (c) performance insights and any concerns.
Result: Progress with confidence
The student passed their SATs with flying colours. The tutor identified slower processing as a key issue, and sessions were extended to 90 minutes with a particular focus on English foundations. Extra time was given to SPaG to help the student overcome literacy barriers associated with dyslexia. The parent felt well-informed and reassured throughout.
