From Shy to Confident: Supporting a Quiet Science Student
Challenge: Shy student
A parent approached Online Tutors UK seeking support in science for their academically underperforming but naturally curious child. The student, particularly struggling with Physics calculations, found it difficult to ask questions or express confusion in a busy classroom of 30 pupils. The parent requested a tutor who could build rapport and provide a comfortable, judgement-free environment for learning.

Action: Tailored teaching approach
OTUK worked closely with the student to identify the most suitable teaching style. Our network of tutors offers a variety of methods – from discussion-led to game-based learning. In this case, the student preferred guided sessions where they could follow along at their own pace and take notes without pressure.
Result: Confidence and academic success
We paired the student with a subject expert in Physics, who was also qualified to teach Biology and Chemistry. Given the student’s quieter nature, we structured a rotation across the three sciences, with Physics as the initial focus. The one-to-one setting gradually helped the student open up and engage more freely. As a result, they exceeded their target grade of 6, achieving a strong Grade 8 in their final assessments.
