Supporting a Reluctant Learner with One-to-One Tutoring
Challenge: Student didn’t want tutoring
A parent approached OTUK for help with their child who disliked school, had a record of truancy, and came from a troubled background. The primary goal was to build foundational skills in Maths and English to support future opportunities. However, the student was initially disengaged and resistant to any form of formal learning.

Action: Building trust before teaching
Rather than launching straight into subject content, trial sessions were held with tutors who focused on opening dialogue with the student. Early lessons revolved around broader conversations about education, future goals, and what the student wanted to achieve. This allowed trust and rapport to develop before introducing curriculum-based content.
Result: Re-engagement through one-to-one support
Over time, the student became more engaged and began to view sessions as a safe, judgment-free space. With growing confidence, they began to take initiative – attempting independent Maths work and even bringing it to lessons for feedback. The one-to-one support proved crucial in fostering motivation and laying the groundwork for future success.
