In Key Stage 1, mathematics teaching focuses on two main goals: building pupils’ confidence with numbers and encouraging them to think “mathematically.” Through practices such as counting exercises and progressive learning of place value concepts (tens, hundreds, etc.), children begin to not only become more proficient working with numbers but also get practice problem-solving in creative ways and thinking critically about the way numbers work together.
